Similar to the Air Aware cliché. Fleets of opposing ships always seem to meet at the same "level", and all maneuvering done by large ships will be in the same 2-dimensional plane. In addition, even though there is no up or down in space, the tops of the ships in most movies are continually pointing in the same direction as if there was a common "up" reference.
